Let’s sing our favorite hymns this summer! What are they? You tell me! Since this is a presidential election season, we will vote for our favorite hymns in June and sing the “Top 10 Favorites” in July and August. This is how it will work. There will be a ballot in every bulletin at worship this June. Every person present at worship at St. Paul’s UCC will be able to vote for their favorite hymn. There is no minimum age. Simply, one person, one vote for each Sunday you are present at worship in June. Thus, if you are here more than one Sunday (which you should be!) you may vote more than once. You may vote for a different hymn each week, or you may vote for the same hymn each week and increase the chances of your favorite making the Top Ten. You may choose a hymn from one of the hymnals, or you may write in a title. If the write-in makes the Top Ten and we can find the words and legally sing it (copyright laws), we will sing it! Ballots will be collected in the offering plates and counted by a volunteer. The results will remain a secret, hermetically sealed (or is it hermeneutically sealed?) in an envelope placed in a copy of the Interpreters Dictionary of the Bible hidden behind the old tombstones in the church basement. (Just kidding!) The results will remain a secret until revealed one at a time each week in a Top Ten Countdown, beginning with number 10 on July 6th and singing the number one favorite on September 7th. Have some fun with this. You may find several like minded persons and caucus (i.e. get together and decide as a group what song or songs to vote for). If a Christmas carol is your favorite and enough people vote for it, we will sing a Christmas carol in July! If you are out of town on business or on vacation and cannot worship at St. Paul’s, don’t worry. Worship at another church (any denomination), bring me a bulletin from that church and I will give you an absentee ballot.
I hope this will be an enjoyable way for me to learn your favorite hymns and be sure that we sing them. And, it will reward those faithful worshippers who are here every Sunday! Pastor LaSalle |
